William Thompson (1821–1856) was the initial "self-confidence man". Thompson was a clumsy swindler who questioned his victims to specific self-assurance in him by giving him revenue or their view as an alternative to getting their confidence in a far more nuanced way. A couple of people today trustworthy Thompson with their money and watches.[6]
